Capita’s Fire Service College (FSC) was proud to host Guy Martin at its 300-acre site in Moreton-in-Marsh to film an episode for his four-part Proper Jobs series.

In his own words, Guy attempts roles that involve hard graft and no shortage of skill that don’t always get the recognition they deserve – which led him to approach the FSC and take a hands-on approach to fire training.

In the episode, Guy receives instruction in the techniques required to remove a casualty from a car involved in a serious accident using heavy rescue tools.

Guy also performs a rescue from a smoke-filled compartment utilising the learned skills of his intensive on-the-job training, bringing to life for viewers the split-second decisions involved when saving a human life.

Clair Mowbray, director at the Fire Service College, said:

“We were delighted to host Guy Martin at the College. In filming the action, Guy put the spotlight on the brave and often underappreciated job firefighters do every day to an audience of millions of TV and streaming viewers.

“Last year was the 50th anniversary of the College, and we continue to invest in learning and training at the College to ensure that it remains world-leading for the next fifty years.

“Our hope is that people from all backgrounds consider that training to be a firefighter is one of the most valuable and rewarding career options available.”

Guy Martin added:

"The Fire Service College really opened my eyes up. All the students were keen as keen. And then even the instructors who've been there for years are still saying it’s the best job in the world. Amazing type of person. Yeah, massive respect."

The broadcasting of Guy Martin’s programme follows the visit of The Princess Royal to the college last month to open a new AI-powered Immersive Technology Suite. With large, free-roam VR capabilities, the FSC can now deliver realistic training scenarios with complete freedom of movement.

For fifty years, the FSC has served as the central fire training establishment in the UK, from those in junior ranks to Chief Fire Officers, as well as supporting wider emergency services and first responders. Capita’s long-term strategic vision for the FSC is for the site to expand its focus to support resilience frameworks, address civil preparedness and support innovation.
