We are delighted to announce that we have been recognised as a Disability Confident Leader (level 3).
Disability Confident is a government scheme that supports employers to recruit, retain and develop colleagues with disabilities.
While we have already achieved this status locally in some parts of the business, this group level accreditation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion and ensuring that any colleague with a disability has the opportunity to succeed.
Our Responsible Business Strategy 2024-26 set out our commitment to becoming a Disability Confident Leader and we have been working hard to achieve this.
The Disability Confident scheme has provided us with a valuable framework to identify what we were already doing well, take a more joined up approach and find ways to improve how we recruit, retain and develop colleagues with disabilities.
Some of the ways we have done this are:
- Implementing the Disability Confident interview scheme, offering interviews to candidates if they have declared a disability and meet the minimum criteria for the role.
- Reviewing the reasonable adjustments process, streamlining the way adjustments are picked up, managed and implemented both within the hiring process and the support available for current colleagues.
- Working with the Capita Ability Network (CAN) who provide valuable experience and insights to help us remove barriers and improve policy.
- Launching a Disability Mentoring Scheme, pairing senior leaders with colleagues who have disabilities, long term health conditions or neurodivergent conditions.
- Making a difference to our communities through local schemes, such as a paid work placement programme for young people with disabilities set up by our Capita Intelligent Communications Team in Mansfield.
- Promoting a culture where colleagues feel more comfortable in sharing their disability status so that we can improve our data and the visibility of our workforce.
2024 has seen Capita take some huge strides forward in our aim to ensure all colleagues can bring their whole selves to work. Achieving Disability Confident Leader Level 3 is another significant step in our journey to create better outcomes for those with/supporting another with a disability, neurodivergent or long-term health condition. I am extremely proud to be a part of a company that continues to drive such positive change year on year.
Pulling all the information needed for our final submission was a true team effort and involved collaboration between the People Function, Diversity, Inclusion and Social Value teams, Talent Acquisition teams, our CAN network and the wider business. Thank you to everyone who helped us to reach this fantastic milestone.
