Hear from three of our Digital and Tech Consulting apprentices on what it’s really like to study and learn, and what they’re focusing on for the future.
Through our hands-on, immersive apprenticeships, we support our colleagues every step of the way. At the end of their three years, they have a nationally recognised qualification, real work experience and a permanent job, with none of the debt. Everyone taking part in our apprenticeships directly contributes to our success as a business and their ideas help shape the way we work.
Charanpreet Braich, chose our Digital and Tech Consulting Apprenticeship rather than university because she found as a student, she much preferred a hands-on approach to learning, rather than a classroom. “I wanted an opportunity that would allow me to get experience that I could utilise in the real world and make a difference. Deciding to pursue an apprenticeship was the best option I could have made since I wanted to advance my education and personal talents.”
Likewise, Victoria Adeniran, decided to do an apprenticeship because she wanted an alternative to a traditional university route into work, and she wanted to learn and work simultaneously. “I feel like apprenticeships are richer in terms of the experience that you gain and the education that you receive. I wanted to expand my knowledge and see how it is applied in a work setting.”
Day-to-day differences
Digital Tech Consulting Apprentice, Kisanth Sivakumar has different day-to-day tasks, depending on what he’s working on. “My responsibilities include researching existing predictive data models, reporting methods, and performing unstructured data analysis, developing and assisting in the delivery of a predictive model, designing and delivering a training course for a Power Platform, and participating in Capita's CSR programmes.”
As an apprentice, he relishes the opportunity to meet and work with a diverse group of people. “Each person brings a unique perspective and set of skills to the table, which has assisted me in broadening my own knowledge and understanding of the field.”
Similarly, Victoria explains that she attends various stand-up meetings with her colleagues, gets involved in research tasks to add value to her team, tests solutions and much more. She works remotely, so a lot of what she does happens virtually via Teams. However, she also gets to go into the office to help facilitate activities in the Capita Studio, as well as spending time doing courses, such as AGILE and UX, to further expand her knowledge and build up her profile and skillset.
“I enjoy project work because it’s never a dull moment,” says Victoria. “Meeting colleagues and clients and working together on projects is something I really enjoy”. She also loves the in-person modules, run by ADA, our training provider. “All the apprentices attend lectures in Manchester and get to connect with each other in person. Working from home can be a bit isolating, so it’s nice when we can all meet up. The most rewarding thing is when I get to apply my knowledge from modules in projects that I am on. I get a front row seat seeing the modules brought to life in real scenarios.”
Looking to the future
Kisanth is excited about what the future will bring at Capita. He says, “Having a successful career as a consultant within Capita will lead me to opportunities for advancement. I’ve really enjoyed working on a variety of challenging and interesting projects. I’m looking forward to gaining expertise in specific areas of technology and working with a diverse group of clients and colleagues.”
Charanpreet adds that her apprenticeship has given her the opportunity try new things and develop new skills, while working with a diverse group of people has allowed her to create new relationships. But what she’s really enjoyed is being able to bring new ideas to the table, to advance Capita's viewpoints and find solutions for clients. In terms of where she sees herself in the future, she says: “I intend to take the lead on initiatives within the Cyber Security guild and really make an impact.”
