Capita Real Estate and Infrastructure has helped to make one of England’s top 10 tourist destinations even more enjoyable in the heart of the Lake District World Heritage Site on behalf of Cumbria County Council.
Glebe Road and the adjacent lake shore at Bowness-on-Windermere, has been regenerated with a £2 million makeover. The project was jointly funded by Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council. Together with a smaller project in Grasmere, the objective was to enhance the visitor experience by ‘Optimising Connectivity’ at key tourist sites.
At the opening event on 20 October, Councillor Keith Little, Cumbria County Council said;
A tight budget and stakeholder consultation played a big part in directing the designs. The tired, cluttered and unkempt appearance of Bowness bay has been replaced by sweeping, curved seating set into a low level retaining wall which follows the edge of the lake; contemporary herbaceous and grass planting and high quality paving in selected areas. Some features of local cultural heritage significance, including a drinking fountain and mature trees have been restored and retained.
Jayne Garbutt, Capita project director responsible for the design, said: "The project is an excellent example of collaboration between clients and consultants. The team has worked to connect visitors and residents with the lakes, which is so vitally important to experience the true beauty of the national park. We are proud to have made the most of the funding to deliver a high quality, relaxing environment for the local people and tourists to enjoy."
