Kim talks about joining Capita from the Royal Navy, adapting to civilian life and benefitting from the Capita mentor programme.
The best part of my role is the teamwork and empowerment to get the job done. We have a lot of autonomy and trust that we are capable and can deliver. Even as we recruit and grow in numbers, we are a diverse and friendly team and enjoy what we are doing.
A unique opportunity
I knew Project Selborne was going to be an amazing opportunity. Having worked on the Royal Navy’s transition team for this contract before joining Capita, I was really interested in the idea of consolidating training into one organisation to enable the continued growth and development of every single submariner who comes through the Royal Navy Submarine Training Centre (RNSTC).
Opportunities
In November 2021, I ended my 25-year career as a Training Management Officer in the Royal Navy to join Capita. Now, I’m a Capability and Coherence Manager at the RNSTC. I’m there to ensure that we have the right operating procedures and equipment in place to support the delivery of training capability at the RNSTC.
It’s a move that granted me new freedom outside of the military environment to work at a level that is based on my skills and experience. I really enjoy the organisational aspects of the role, having oversight of all the workstreams and ensuring the stakeholders are kept informed and engaged. It’s also offered me the opportunity to develop an exciting new career with new challenges and experiences.
From military to employee
Transitioning from the service to civilian life took a lot of getting used to, but I have greatly benefited from Capita’s onboarding processes and mentor programme; my mentor was a senior leader in defence, who works across the civilian and military sectors He has supported and challenged me to look at things through a commercial lens and to adapt to operating within a predominantly civilian environment. To be honest, the first six months of my Capita role felt like a secondment, but now I feel like a Capita employee who happens to know quite a bit about the military.
