Reflecting on our first year with Alzheimer’s Society

Last year, our people collectively voted to support Alzheimer’s Society as our corporate charity partner. Alzheimer’s Society have one vision – a world without dementia – and we want to support them in delivering their vision. A year into our partnership, we wanted to reflect on what we have achieved.

Last year it was revealed that dementia is the leading cause of death in England and Wales and one of the world’s top 10 killers, but it remains the only one we cannot prevent, cure or even slow down. Currently there are 850,000 people living with dementia and this is set to rise to 1 million by 2021.

Dementia will not only affect our clients and their customers, it will, or may already, impact you and your family.

Through our partnership, we are committed to:

  • Making 50% of our UK workforce Dementia Friends,
  • Raising £500,000 to support services they deliver, like Side-by-Side – a fantastic service which sees volunteers provide companionship and support to people living with dementia, and
  • Working towards becoming a Dementia Friendly business.

Dementia Friends

Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Friends programme is the biggest ever initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia. A Dementia Friend is someone that has learnt a little bit about dementia so that they can turn this new understanding into action supporting customers and colleagues affected by the condition.

In February, we launched our Dementia Friends Valentine’s Day campaign where we encouraged all our staff to become a different kind of friend – a Dementia Friend – by watching a 15-minute impactful video.

We are pleased to have created 932 Dementia Friends through this campaign. We won’t stop here – we hope to create 26,000 Dementia Friends by World Alzheimer’s Society Day in September.

Raising over £100,000

The goodwill of our people has seen us raise an impressive £122,000 so far. The money is used to support the invaluable services that the Alzheimer’s Society deliver. Across Capita, we have seen some fantastic events.

17 Capita employees trekked up Snowden at midnight, raising £20,000. Our annual Capita Charity Week in October highlighted the importance of community investment and the pinnacle of the year was the publication of our ‘Happy Memories’ Cook Book. We invited employees to share recipes that they associate with their own happy memory or that of a loved one who is living with dementia. Even our new CEO, Jon Lewis got involved submitting his mum’s apple and rhubarb crumble recipe.

What’s next?

As we continue to develop our relationship with Alzheimer’s Society, we look forward to further increasing our understanding of dementia through the Dementia Friends initiative and will work with the Society to see how we can provide a more inclusive and accessible workplace for people living with dementia. Our fundraising calendar is full of exciting activities to engage employees across the organisation in raising money for this important cause.
